Resilience has increasingly found its practice in urban development plans. In response to prepare cities and their residents for uncertainties, social resilience capacities are crucial characteristics of people when facing hazards. Since Greater Christchurch has been deeply suffering from a series of earthquakes in 2010/2011, an urban development strategy was established emphasising on the dimension of resilience. This study evaluates whether social resilience is being established through the strategy. Based on a qualitative content analysis, the Resilient Greater Christchurch urban development strategy was analysed under following indicators governance, diversity, social capital and social resilience capacities. It was found that social resilience is not explicitly classified in the Resilient Greater Christchurch strategy. Although people are identified to be at the core of creating resilience, governance structures appear to be deeply influenced by public sector organisations and agencies. Decision-making and empowerment capacities of residents seem undermined. Nevertheless, various projects propose and offer collaboration and gathering opportunities for people in order to strengthen and build social networks. The study has proven that the Resilient Greater Christchurch strategy serves as a social resilience driver whereas additional investigations are necessary to propound further findings.
In this paper a new time-frequency transform based on the constant-Q transform, named as adaptive quality frequency transform (AQFT), is proposed. The AQFT is a non-uniform transform with logarithmically spaced center frequencies. The CQT offers a computational disadvantage due to the large number of samples needed to assure the quality and the desired resolution at the lower frequency range. The AQFT addresses this problem precisely and limits the number of samples required by a comparable frequency division. Finally, computer simulations are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm. According to the simulation results, the accuracy and the processing time of the AQFT and of traditional time-frequency analysis methods such as the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), the Signal Derivate FFT (SD-FFT) and the wavelet packet transform (WPT) are contrasted.

While this book has been written primarily to meet the needs of undergraduate and master students in the field of aquaculture, we hope that it will also be useful to a wider audience.
The automotive industry with its dealerships in South Africa, has the potential to contribute to domestic economic growth, create jobs and stimulate economic competition. However, the industry faces several challenges that affect its long-term viability, organisational outcome and sustainability. Employee exposure to psychological stress and insufficient job resources impact negatively on engagement and organisational outcome. This study examined the influence of job demands and job resources on employee work engagement and work engagement on the sustainability of car dealerships in South Africa. It identified a gap in the literature in the correlation between work engagement and its impact on organisational sustainability outcomes. Against this background, the primary objective of this study was to measure the effect of engagement on the sustainability of car dealerships in South Africa. A quantitative research paradigm was applied and a sample of sales and service employees working in dealerships in South Africa was drawn. An online survey was conducted and a total of 375 usable questionnaires were returned for statistical analysis. The validity of the scales was confirmed using Cronbach’s alpha values for the individual study variables. The validity of the scales was confirmed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The collected data were also subjected to several statistical analyses. These included descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product moment correlations, multiple regression analysis (MRA) and the analysis of variance (ANOVA). The majority of the respondents agreed regarding their experience of work engagement at the dealerships. The regression analyses showed that mental demands, social support and autonomy have significant positive influence on work engagement. A significant positive correlation was also identified between work engagement and sustainability. The results also showed that some of the demographic variables examined in this study had significant impact on the level of work engagement. In light of the findings of this study, several recommendations were made to increase the level of work engagement of employees and the sustainability of the dealerships in order to support the achievement of the company’s goals and visions.
